TURNER CALLS ON DCA TO HELP HOLD THE LINE ON RENTS

TRENTON – Sen. Shirley Turner (D-Mercer) today sent a letter to the acting commissioner of the Department of Community Affairs to help hold the line on rent increases that could burden New Jersey tenants.

Turner cited the Social Security Administration’s decision to freeze the annual cost of living adjustment for beneficiaries for the next two years, as well as stagnant wages for public and private sector employees, as factors local rent control boards should consider when considering requests for increases.

“I am concerned that without appropriate guidance these local boards may grant rent increases that are injurious to New Jersey tenants,” Sen. Turner said. “My district office has already received phone calls from distressed tenants unable to pay their rent.”
