SWEENEY STATEMENT ON JUMP IN NJ UNEMPLOYMENT RATE

Highest Rate in State in Decades

TRENTON – Senate President Steve Sweeney issued the following statement today regarding New Jersey’s unemployment rate jumping to 9.8%, the highest it has been at any point in decades:

"There is no way to interpret this other than bad. I don't want to hear any spin. I don't want to hear anything remotely close to painting this as good news. I don't want a press conference touting these numbers as if it's a 'mission accomplished' moment.

"What I want to see is this administration admit it is failing in terms of getting people back to work. What I want to see is a solid plan from this administration on how we create jobs in New Jersey. The people of this state deserve nothing less than that.

"The 'Jersey Comeback' is possible if this administration would either get out of the way or come up with an actual idea. If they won't do either, we will simply step up as we have had to do in the past."
